When is it time to repaint my home?

Warning signs of when to repaint the exterior of your home

The exterior paint on your home is there to protect it, so ideally you should re-paint before the paint starts to fail. This is particularly critical for timber substrates, but is however not easy to determine. To help we have put together a list of warning signs to help identify when maintenance should be undertaken before the substrate starts to deteriorate

1.Chalking

Chalking is the first sign that maintenance is necessary as it indicates that the paint is losing it’s protective film. It can be seen as a white sheen on the paintwork and if you run your finger along the paint you will pick up a chalky residue.

Check all sides of the house as one will weather quicker than the others, especially in coastal areas or on busy roads. The occurrence of chalking does however depend on the climate and environmental factors, so sometimes the first indication of paint failure might be cracking

2.Cracking

When hairline cracks appear repainting is vital before the cracks become bigger and allow moisture ingress which causes the paint to peel

3.Peeling

Peeling indicates that moisture has already started to penetrate the substrate and it will not be a satisfactory base on which to apply fresh coats of paint. The longer you put off repainting the worse it will get and the more it will cost you to put it right

Regular repainting means that it is seldom necessary to strip off the old paint before repainting.
